Awareness | Education | Support Watsons Pink Ribbon Campaign

Pink October Month is breast cancer awareness month. Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. As such, early detection is important in the prevention of the spread or severity of breast cancer.

Watsons Malaysia, as Malaysia’s largest health and beauty retailer, aims to promote the early detection of breast cancer among Malaysian women through the Watsons Pink Ribbon campaign themed ‘Together Towards Wellness’ in collaboration with The Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia (BCWA). BCWA was founded in 1986 by medical specialists who realised the need for peer support for women with breast cancer and also promotes public education of the early detection of breast cancer.

During the Watsons Pink Ribbon campaign from 2nd to 29th October 2018, RM1 will be donated by Watsons to BCWA for every RM50 purchase and above of participating brands products. In addition, Watsons members will get a free RM10 voucher for the next purchase at Watsons, as a token of appreciation by Watsons for supporting the campaign.

Joining Watsons in this meaningful Watsons Pink Ribbon campaign includes Biore, Bio-essence, Blackmores, Cetaphil, Gatsby, GVC, Hada Labo, Kate, Lifebuoy, Maybelline, Nano White, NH Detox, Nivea, Oral-B, Pure Beauty, Pantene and Safi.

The pink ribbon magnet pin, which is a symbolism of breast cancer awareness will also be made available for purchase at only RM5 in selected Watsons stores and on www.watsons.com.my as well. Upon purchasing this magnet, customers will receive free health checks and also make over by Watsons experts. Proceeds of the pink ribbon magnet pin at Watsons will also be donated to BCWA for its cause to advocate early detection of breast cancer awareness.

“Breast cancer is the leading cancer affecting women in Malaysia and approximately one in 20 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, according to medical experts. However, early detection can save a life. According to medical experts the 5 year survival rate of Stage 1 breast cancer patients is up to 98 percent.

As such, all women should be educated on the awareness of the early detection of breast cancer. As Malaysia’s largest health and beauty retailer, we wanted to take the opportunity in using our brand as a platform to communicate and educate our dear customers, the importance of early breast cancer detection. We also wanted to our customers to know that they are not alone in facing the challenges of breast cancer and that support is there for them.

With Watsons collaboration with BCWA, we hope that the donations channelled from the Watsons Pink Ribbon campaign will enable the association to do more to improve the quality of life for women with breast cancer and to promote the right education of breast cancer to the community,” said Caryn Loh, Managing Director of Watsons Malaysia.

Joining Caryn the launch of the Watsons Pink Ribbon Campaign were Janet Khor, Vice President of the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia, Low Siew Hui, Finance and IT Director of Watsons Malaysia (and also AS Watson Global Group CSR Committee) and members of the media and Watsons celebrity friends Sasha Saidin and Steffi Sidhu.

Guardian Malaysia ‘Take Your Life Back’ Campaign To Educate On Safe and Responsible Pain Relief Usage

For the majority, we tend to rely on the proven standby of Paracetamol for fever and pain relief, only seeking medical assistance if the pain becomes too much to bear, or the fever does not come down. For others the cost, time and inconvenience of seeking medical treatment for what is perceived to be relatively minor problems requires some knowledge and familiarity with over-the-counter medication.

You are not alone with your paracetamol tablets in first aid kits, medicine cabinets, office drawers, handbags and backpacks as a standby for everything from the first signs of a flu, cold or headache.

Paracetamol was discovered in 1877[1].  and has been extensively studied for safety and efficacy, making it safe and effective when used as directed[2]. It is the most commonly used medication for pain and fever in both the United States and Europe[3]. It is on the World Health Organization's List ofEssential Medicines, the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system[4]

It is found in more than 600 different medicines including prescription and over-the-counter pain relievers, fever reducers, sleep aids as well as in cough, cold and allergy medicines. The affordability and easy availability of Paracetamol can however result in over-reliance and overuse.

Guardian is a trusted name in Malaysia for over 50 years. It   operates a chain of over 400 stores, providing a variety of Pharmaceutical, Health and Beauty products to more than 2.5 million Malaysian customers a month.

Enter Guardian’s Fever and Pain Relief Tablet 500mg, a trusted and proven generic paracetamol solution, and the ‘Take Your Life Back’ education and awareness program to help consumers understand safe dosage of this medication, and  when they should seek medical help.

Guardian is delighted to offer this affordable paracetamol pain and fever relief range as a first option to light to moderate pain linked to cold and flu, while educating on responsible usage.

This tablet contains a paracetamol formulation that is an analgesic and antipyretic agent which relieves fever, headache and muscular pain caused by cold and flu. It is gentle on the stomach.

Available as 500mg tablets in blister pack strips it retails forRM3.10for 10 tablets, RM8.90 for 30 tablets and RM26.00 for 100 tablets at all Guardian outlets nationwide.

It is the same as brand-name paracetamol in dosage, safety, effectiveness, strength, stability, and quality, as well as in the way it is taken and should be used. The only difference is that it is priced even more affordably. As a trusted health and beauty chain, Guardian Fever and Pain Relief Tablet 500mg is made in line with good manufacturing practices.

The Guardian Take Your Life Back paracetamol education and awareness campaign recommends five simple steps to use paracetamol safely.

Step 1
Read the ‘Drug Facts’ information on any OTC or prescription label, then follow the direction.

Step 2
Pay attention to:-
How much paracetamol is in a single dose?
How many hours before you can take another dose?
How many doses are safe in a single day?
Dosage for children and for adults?

Step 3
Don’t take more than directed, even if your pain or fever isn’t better. Taking more puts you at risk for liver damage. A visit to a medical professional is recommended if the pain or fever persists.

Step 4
Don’t take more than one medicine at the same time that contains paracetamol.

Step 5
Don’t drink alcohol when taking medicines that contain paracetamol.

Always ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have questions about dosing instructions or medicines that contain paracetamol.

Dymista Nasal Spray For Allergic Rhinitis (AR)

Mylan pharmaceutical company announced the launch of Dymista®, a new class of treatment for Allergic Rhinitis (AR) in Malaysia at a conference. This new advanced breakthrough product contains two main active ingredients – Azelastine Hydrochloride and Fluticasone propionate that provide significant relief to AR patients with moderate to severe symptoms of the nose, eyes and underlying inflammation in just a single spray.

At the conference, Dr Kong Min Han, President of Malaysian Society of Otorhinolaryngologists Head& Neck Surgeons (MSOHNS), along with Datuk Dr. Kuljit Singh, Consultant of Ear, Nose, Throat Surgeon and Professor David Price from the Primary Care Respiratory Medicine at University of Aberdeen, shared insights on AR, the current treatment availability in the market and the latest treatment options in controlling the symptoms of AR.

A chronic respiratory disease caused by an allergen such as pollen, dust and animal dander, AR often triggers Nasal AR symptoms such as blocked nose, nasal itching, running nose, sneezing as well as Ocular AR symptoms like itching, watering and redness of the eye. Recent studies have also shown a significant association between asthma and AR.It is reported that up to 28.8% of the AR patients in Malaysia are concurrent asthmatic sufferers[1]. It has further been proven that AR patients who sought treatment with Dymista® achieved a 100% reduction of the reflective Total Nasal Symptom Score (rTNSS) in a shorter period[2] when compared to the current available AR treatment.

Commenting at the launch, Mr. Shaun Lau, Country Manager of Mylan in Malaysia said, “Launch of Dymista® is a major milestone for Mylan in providing AR patients access to this novel drug to effectively control the chronic disease and is in line with our mission to provide the world's 7 billion people access to high quality medicine.”

Sharing insights on the need for addressing the symptoms, Dr. Kong stated, “While AR generally triggers multiple symptoms, majority of the patients experience nasal itching, sneezing, runny nose and nasal blockage which affects the quality of their life. Ocular symptoms remain widely neglected, as well, while they concern most patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and have been shown to impair their daily activities.About 43.3% of the AR patients suffer from sleep disturbance, causing them to experience fatigue, irritability and in more serious condition, cognitive impairment. The symptom burden of AR is high in Malaysia and as such, a prescription that tackles these symptoms is necessary.”

Datuk Dr.Kuljit, on the other hand stated that, “AR treatment arsenal has remained static over the years with its focus placing only on mono-therapy developments which do not result in substantial symptomatic control of the AR. For instance, many patients have reported dissatisfaction over the use of intranasal steroid sprays due to its slow onset of action and breakthrough symptoms. He further added that while most patients have resorted to multiple therapies to achieve better and faster nasal and ocular symptom relief, they continue to experience symptoms of AR including running nose, sneezing, congestion and itching of the eyes.

“Recommended in the Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) guidelines, Dymista® is suitable for individuals suffering from AR due to its fast onset of action. Using Dymista®, AR patients with moderate to severe symptoms can experience immediate relief in as fast as 5 minutes, which is twice as effective as the current available treatment (i.e. intranasal steroid spray). This new formulation of Antihistamine and Corticosteroid targets all nasal andocular symptoms to provide patients a significantly better symptomatic relief of AR,” pointed Prof Price.

The Dymista® nasal spray is indicated for adults and children aged 12 years and above who suffer with AR. Dymista® nasal spray is suitable for long term use, and it is recommended to use one spray per nostril twice daily. It can be obtained upon consultation from specialists or general practitioners.

Jom Donate Blood At MBO Cinemas Blood Donation Drive 5.0 | Blood Connects Us All.

Five years and going strong, MBO Cinemas and St John Ambulance of Malaysia (SJAM) returns with their annual blood donation drive. This campaign which is supported by the National Blood Bank and the Ministry of Health will be held at MBO Cinemas outlets nationwide.

The theme for this year’s campaign – Blood Connects Us All - stresses on the importance of how Malaysians with different blood groups can be united through this single act of selflessness. This drive also aims to inspire Malaysians that share the same goal to help top up the depleting blood supply at the National Blood Bank, which usually tends to drop drastically before festive seasons and school holidays.

Over the past four years, MBO’s Blood Donation Campaign has successfully collected close to 17,000 pints of blood and once again counts on its Malaysian customers and fans to come together as a community and contribute to the cause.

“Despite ongoing efforts to raise awareness for the need for more blood donations and drives around the country, the National Blood Bank is struggling to keep up demands and is facing a shortage nationwide.” said MBO’s General Manager of Marketing and Sales, Ms Jamie Tiong.

“On that note, we are calling all Malaysians and Internationals to help us fill the blood banks for this year’s blood donation drive. Through their help and support, we are hoping to achieve the collection of 6,000 pints of blood at 25 MBO outlets nationwide.”, added Ms Jamie Tiong.

According to Dr Noryati Abu Amin, Director at the National Blood, the demand for blood has drastically increased over the years because of three main factors, namely the rise in the number of patients, the increase in the development of medical technology and the increase in the availability of speciality hospitals in Malaysia.

Blood banks need a constant supply of donations, as red blood cells can only last a maximum of 42 days, while platelets can only be kept for five to seven days. Plasma can be frozen and if kept in the right conditions, can keep well for years. The short lifespan of some components is the reason why the blood bank is constantly in need of supply. Also, despite a 25 percent of the population having blood type A, it often runs short in the blood bank.

“Thanks to organisations like MBO Cinemas for their continuous commitment to organise an annual blood donation drive, 82,619 new donors have joined the cause nationwide as compared to 76,213 new donors recorded in 2016. This is a positive sign as the patients’ needs are being met under the Ministry of Health”, added Dr Noryati Abu Amin.

An important message the campaign also tries to highlight is the importance of giving blood regularly so that the blood stock can be kept at sufficient levels before an emergency arises. Only 2.2% out of 30 million Malaysians donate blood – which is a far cry from the 3.5% – 5% recorded in more developed countries. On average, government and private hospitals in Malaysia need to prepare around 2,000 bags of blood to support the needs of 1,000 patients per day.

“We are glad to co-organise this event with MBO Cinemas for the fifth year now. Over the years, we have seen many new faces and continue to receive support from the regular donors who never fail to come forward. We have faith that this annual collaboration will continue for years to come,” said Dato' Lai See Ming, Commander-in-Chief at St. John Ambulance of Malaysia.

In conjunction with St John Ambulance’s 110th Anniversary in Malaysia, a free CPR training and demonstration exercise will be conducted in tandem with the blood donation drive to celebrate their formation in Malaysia which stretches back over a century. “Through this CPR training and demonstration exercise, we can educate members of the community on the proper way to perform CPR, so that they are capable of providing help and potentially saving the life of a person in need of CPR, especially of a loved one.”, added Dato' Lai See Ming.

As a sign of gratitude to the donors, MBO will provide each donor with an exclusive goodie bag which includes MBO movie vouchers, snacks and a variety of vouchers from the generous sponsors of this year’s blood donation drive.

The nationwide blood donation drive will be held on the 18th & 19th of August, from 11am – 6pm with the exception of Kedah and Johor where the dates will be the 17th & 18th of August from 11am – 6pm.
