Awareness | Education | Support Watsons Pink Ribbon Campaign

Pink October Month is breast cancer awareness month. Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. As such, early detection is important in the prevention of the spread or severity of breast cancer.

Watsons Malaysia, as Malaysia’s largest health and beauty retailer, aims to promote the early detection of breast cancer among Malaysian women through the Watsons Pink Ribbon campaign themed ‘Together Towards Wellness’ in collaboration with The Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia (BCWA). BCWA was founded in 1986 by medical specialists who realised the need for peer support for women with breast cancer and also promotes public education of the early detection of breast cancer.

During the Watsons Pink Ribbon campaign from 2nd to 29th October 2018, RM1 will be donated by Watsons to BCWA for every RM50 purchase and above of participating brands products. In addition, Watsons members will get a free RM10 voucher for the next purchase at Watsons, as a token of appreciation by Watsons for supporting the campaign.

Joining Watsons in this meaningful Watsons Pink Ribbon campaign includes Biore, Bio-essence, Blackmores, Cetaphil, Gatsby, GVC, Hada Labo, Kate, Lifebuoy, Maybelline, Nano White, NH Detox, Nivea, Oral-B, Pure Beauty, Pantene and Safi.

The pink ribbon magnet pin, which is a symbolism of breast cancer awareness will also be made available for purchase at only RM5 in selected Watsons stores and on www.watsons.com.my as well. Upon purchasing this magnet, customers will receive free health checks and also make over by Watsons experts. Proceeds of the pink ribbon magnet pin at Watsons will also be donated to BCWA for its cause to advocate early detection of breast cancer awareness.

“Breast cancer is the leading cancer affecting women in Malaysia and approximately one in 20 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, according to medical experts. However, early detection can save a life. According to medical experts the 5 year survival rate of Stage 1 breast cancer patients is up to 98 percent.

As such, all women should be educated on the awareness of the early detection of breast cancer. As Malaysia’s largest health and beauty retailer, we wanted to take the opportunity in using our brand as a platform to communicate and educate our dear customers, the importance of early breast cancer detection. We also wanted to our customers to know that they are not alone in facing the challenges of breast cancer and that support is there for them.

With Watsons collaboration with BCWA, we hope that the donations channelled from the Watsons Pink Ribbon campaign will enable the association to do more to improve the quality of life for women with breast cancer and to promote the right education of breast cancer to the community,” said Caryn Loh, Managing Director of Watsons Malaysia.

Joining Caryn the launch of the Watsons Pink Ribbon Campaign were Janet Khor, Vice President of the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia, Low Siew Hui, Finance and IT Director of Watsons Malaysia (and also AS Watson Global Group CSR Committee) and members of the media and Watsons celebrity friends Sasha Saidin and Steffi Sidhu.

A specially produced video that highlighted breast cancer survivors and celebrities promotion early detection was showcased and breast cancer checks were conducted complimentarily for attendees, courtesy of the nurses from the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia.

Brings Fresh Products To Consumers Via RM116 Million GCH Retail Distribution Centre

Malaysia’s Largest Supermarket and Hypermarket Operator, GCH Retail (M) Sdn Bhd, is raising the standard of Freshness in consumer food expectations with the official opening of its RM116 million fresh distribution centre here today. GCH Retail operates GIANT, COLD STORAGE, JASON’S FOOD HALL and MERCATO’S stores, the only one with presence in every state in the country today.

“For over 70 years we have been committed to bringing innovative, value driven, fresh retail experiences to Malaysian consumers across the country. Today, we take that to a new level. This state of the art facility represents a part of our continuing financial commitment, and support at an organisational level to the idea of Freshness in everything we do.” said GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd Managing Director, Pierre-Olivier Deplanck. “From getting the very best local products from farm to table; ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness at every point; and bringing consumers value in every purchase - the new distribution centre is the Gateway for Freshness for Malaysians.”

The largest fresh produce and packed goods processing, packaging and distribution centre of its kind in Malaysia, the fresh distribution centre is part of GCH Retail’s continuous commitment to ensuring that Malaysian consumers at GIANT, Cold Storage, Jason’s Food Hall, and Mercato’s have only the freshest products with the best value for their Ringgit. It focuses on energy efficient operations, rainwater harvesting, heat recovery technology, integrated and automated processes, temperature-controlled environments, and improved handling and logistics processes to improve how GCH Retail brings Malaysians the freshest food and fresh products in the country.

“We are also excited to be able to create more than 200 jobs directly in the warehousing and food processing sectors at this facility. This includes product experts and buyers, quality control professionals and a distribution team, all with the shared focus of ensuring that we bring the best products that we can, as fresh as we can, to customers. We also support more job opportunities indirectly through partnerships with local suppliers, logistics partners and vendors, allowing to actively enhance the economy of the surrounding areas almost immediately,” added Deplanck.

Located in Kajang, the facility took 12 months to build and occupies 25,000 square metres of land, with a built-up area of 10,950 square metres. Dedicated to products which fall under the fresh category, the facility procures and distributes items such as fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and seafood to store locations nationwide. The new distribution centre is more than three times the size of the current GCH operation in Balakong, making it the largest and most innovative fresh distribution centre dedicated to a single retailer in Malaysia.

“I would like to commend GCH Retail on their commitment to provide the nation greater selections for quality products whilst still focusing on providing the best value to Malaysians. With their newest facility, they are narrowing the gap between the field and stores, reaching more local producers and ensuring the freshness of produce around the country, all while providing more job opportunities to the local communities, “ said YB. Dato’ Saifuddin Nasution Bin Ismail, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister.

The distribution centre (DC) is the result of GCH Retail’s insight into the process that brings fresh produce from across the country to Malaysians every day. This labour intensive, and time sensitive process includes picking, packing and handling of a large number of fruits, vegetables, and fresh meats - every step influencing the quality of the produce. Temperature controlled facilities ensure that the freshness of produce from over 200 vendors stored at the distribution centre are constantly maintained, while the digitally enabled infrastructure of the centre, ensures round the clock monitoring for optimum efficiency.

“We operate one of the largest real time, daily supply chain operations of fresh produce in the country. This means we assume the responsibility when it comes to preserving and enhancing the quality of food that we are offering millions of Malaysians. This distribution centre is a key part of that solution as it allows us to monitor, maintain and control the temperature our fresh produce the moment it arrives at our DC and until it reaches our stores. With improved distribution conditions and enhanced processes, we hope to offer the nation even greater quality in freshness, “explained Deplanck.

Being the Gateway for Freshness is more than just about helping consumers eat better - it’s also about ensuring as little food as possible is wasted.

One of the biggest national concerns, food surplus from inefficient supply chains is a challenge for supermarket and hypermarket operators alike, with 45% of all solid waste in the country being edible food waste. With up to 3,000 tonnes of food wasted each day, food surplus is also affecting the country’s economy, amounting into millions of Ringgit going into landfills and waste disposal charges - while denying Malaysians in need of much needed food.

“We have been working on solutions to this problem for several years now as it is something that concerns us deeply. One of the early approaches we used was to work with The Lost Food Project through our stores in selected location. With the launch of our newest facility, we are expanding this partnership - which first began in 2016 exponentially in the hope that it is able to help even more people while further reducing any wastage of food at our facilities,” said Deplanck.

GCH Retail has established processes to control the age, appearance and freshness of its in-store products. When products are kept beyond this period, they are then shared with The Lost Food Project to be re-distributed to those in need. These charities include homes for underprivileged children, soup kitchens for the poor and homeless, as well as those with special needs.

The launch of the fresh distribution centre (DC) is part of GCH Retail’s on-going commitment to providing Malaysian’s retail experiences that work for them. This includes reviewing and renewing the way supermarket and hypermarket shopping experiences are brought into communities, and how these then support the Malaysians around them.

Parents And Kids Have Fun Challenge With Cold Storage Kids Run 2018!

MR and baby MH get so excited in the morning! We are ready to RUN! The Cold Storage Kids Run 2018 is back for its second year running and is better than ever! Last year, mouse mommy and family also participated. Click here to view Cold Storage Kids Run 2017.

This year’s Kids Run featured a longer route and a challenging obstacle course that promised an exciting day out for children and adults alike. Part of an initiative by Cold Storage Malaysia to promote Malaysians on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, the 2018 edition of the Kids Run aims to promote healthy routines from a tender age.

Wow! This year we are having a run in the One Utama Shopping Mall. After that, run towards first obstacle, zig zag road obstacles for the kids. Got to self-balancing to avoid fall down.

We are continue running towards second challenge which is inflatables challenges that kids required to climb, slide and go through a series of obstacles. MR is so agile and able to pass through the challenges.

The third obstacles is a huge ball pools that filled with many colourful balls. Haha! The kids have fun in the ball pools and do not wanted to get out from the ball pools including MR and baby MH!

Malaysia is one of the top four most overweight countries in Asia Pacific and the rapid rise of overweight children is alarming, as they are at a higher risk of becoming obese as adults and that could lead to many health complications.1 With the advancement of technology, most children and parents take for granted the importance of regular exercises and a balanced meal. Couple that with parents busy schedules, children tend to eat unhealthy food most of the time and do not get enough important nutrients that their body needs in order to grow.

Cold Storage Malaysia is leading the conversation on promoting the importance of an active lifestyle as well as an adequate diet to the public, especially to the future leaders of our country.

The Cold Storage Kids Run further emphasis our commitment in inspiring both children and adults, to make healthy food choices by providing a fine selection of fresh and high quality groceries in our stores.

This event is part of our continuous effort in educating children on the importance of a balanced lifestyle since young as it could encourage them to start adopting to healthy habits in the future.

Speaking at the event, Pierre-Olivier Deplanck, Managing Director of GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. said, “We wanted to create a fun activity that our customers and family can participate and at the same time the activity should consist of educational messages that is explained in an exciting manner. Once again, Cold Storage Malaysia is proud to call the Kids Run initiative as one of our best effort in promoting the importance of living a balanced and healthy lifestyle.”

Children today are smarter than we give them credit for. We believe that the duty of educating the children on living a healthy lifestyle falls on their parents. Therefore, by encouraging parents to also take part, the adults can lead by example and become a positive role model to their children when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle.

The Cold Storage Kids Run also gives us a chance to meet our customers personally and converse with them on the importance of eating healthy. We want our customers to feel close at heart with us and appreciate their feedbacks as we close to further cement our place as “The Fresh Food People” in Malaysia.

Cold Storage Malaysia is also bringing the cheer up to 40 MyKasih Foundation primary school students beneficiaries from Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Lanjan (Asli) joining the fun-run towards a healthier lifestyle. A total of RM40,000 from the Cold Storage Kids Run 2018 was channelled to MyKasih Foundation - a non-profit organisation that aims to help the less fortunate in Malaysia as part of Cold Storage Malaysia CSR effort.

MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder, Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat, expressed his gratitude to Cold Storage for their generosity and continued support of MyKasih Foundation. “We are thankful to receive this RM 40,000 contribution which will go towards the MyKasih ‘Love My School’ student bursary programme to aid students from low-income households. The foundation currently supports 6,500 students in 101 schools, out of which, 30 are Orang Asli primary schools.”

In addition to providing the students with cashless bursaries, the programme includes supplementary activities such as tuition, annual sports days, edible garden projects and installation of computer labs for 21st century learning.

“We truly appreciate this gesture from Cold Storage and hope that other companies will come forward with their charitable giving to support the MyKasih ‘Love My School’ programme”, said Tan Sri Dr Ngau.

Through the Cold Storage Kids Run, we hope to make a change by partnering up with multiple brands that share the same vision as us.

“On behalf of Cold Storage Malaysia, we would like to extend our gratitude towards our event's main sponsors, Emborg, Pediasure, Korea Agro - Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation, Bestari, Darlie, Freedom, Goodday, Julies, Kewpie Malaysia, Kinder Joy, Milo, Prego, Bega, Sunquick, Tiger, PetitMiam, Anmum, O’ Fresh, Enfagrow, Facklemann, Garden Basket, Hot Wheels, KMT, Philips, Wyeth Nutrition Malaysia .
