Table Setting Etiquette For Dinner Parties or Grand Celebrations

So, you're throwing a dinner party or celebrating a special occasion, and you want your table to look amazing! But where do you even begin?

Don't worry, because this guide will walk you through the basics of table setting etiquette, from the essentials to some extra tips for making your table sparkle.

The Basics: A Layered Look

Think of your table setting like building a house – you need a strong foundation before adding the finishing touches. Here's what goes where, from the bottom up:

Tablecloth or Placemats: This is the base layer, like a carpet for your table. Choose a tablecloth that complements your theme and is the right size for your table. If you're going for a more casual look, placemats work great too.

Dinner plate: This is the main plate where your main course will be served. Place it in the center of where each guest will be sitting.

Salad plate: This smaller plate goes on top of the dinner plate and is usually used for salads or appetizers.

Bread plate: This is a small plate, usually placed above and to the left of the dinner plate, for bread or rolls.

Cutlery Corner: Forks, Knives, and Spoons, Oh My!

Now it's time for the cutlery – those fancy words for your forks, knives, and spoons. Remember, the utensils are used from the outside in, with the ones you'll use first being placed furthest from the plate. Here's a breakdown:

Knife: This goes to the right of the dinner plate, with the blade facing inwards.

Spoon: This goes to the right of the knife.

Fork: This goes to the left of the dinner plate, with the tines facing upwards.

Salad Fork: This is a smaller fork, usually placed above the dinner plate, on top of the salad plate.

Bonus Tip: If you're serving dessert, you can place the dessert spoon and fork above the dinner plate, horizontally, with the handles pointing towards the right.

Glass Act: Sparkling Up Your Beverages

Glasses are placed slightly above and to the right of the dinner plate. Here's a general guide:

Water glass: This is the largest glass and goes closest to the plate.

Wine glass: If you're serving wine, place the glass to the right of the water glass. Red wine glasses are usually larger than white wine glasses.

Note: You don't need to set a glass for every beverage you might offer. Only set the glasses you'll be using for the specific drinks you're serving.

The Finishing Touches: Adding Flair

Now comes the fun part – adding your own personal touch! Here are some ideas:

Napkins: These can be placed either on the left side of the plate or folded and placed in the center of the plate. You can even get creative with different napkin folding techniques.

Centerpiece: This is a decorative element placed in the center of the table. It can be anything from flowers or candles to a small decorative bowl. Just make sure it's not too tall or bulky, as it shouldn't obstruct conversation between guests.

Candles: Candles can add a warm and inviting ambiance, but make sure they're placed safely and away from anything flammable.

Place cards: These are small cards with guests' names written on them, placed in front of their respective seats. This is a nice touch for larger gatherings or formal occasions.

Extra Tips for Grand Celebrations

For special occasions, you can take your table setting up a notch with these additional tips:

Upgrade your tableware: If you have special occasion plates, glasses, or silverware, now's the time to use them!

Coordinating colours: Choose a colour scheme for your table setting and stick to it. This will create a cohesive and elegant look.

Add some sparkle: Use decorative elements like glitter, sequins, or metallic accents to add a touch of glamour.

Grand opening flowers: Flowers can add a beautiful and fragrant touch to your table. Choose flowers that are in season and complement your colour scheme.

Remember, the most important thing about table setting etiquette is to create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for your guests. Don't stress too much about perfection – just relax, have fun, and enjoy your celebration!
