Shopee Empowers Over 100,000 New Local Entrepreneurs in Year 2024

Shopee’s ‘Sayangi Malaysia, Jom Rai Lokal 2024’1 study reveals a significant milestone in the Malaysian e-commerce landscape: over 100,000 entrepreneurs joined the Shopee ecosystem in 2024. This substantial increase reflects the rising acknowledgement of e-commerce as a vital and sustainable business model in today’s rapidly changing digital market.

“The impressive growth of Malaysian entrepreneurs on our platform this year is a testament to their proactive embracing of digital opportunities. Shopee remains dedicated to providing local Malaysian businesses with the essential resources including Affiliate Marketing Solutions, third-party logistics services, and Shopee Live to thrive in today’s competitive e-commerce landscape. We are proud to play a part in the journey for local enterprises to broaden their reach, optimise their operations, and achieve growth in this ever-evolving economy,” said Ming Kit Tan, Head of Marketing and Business Intelligence at Shopee Malaysia.

Shopee Live has emerged as a powerful instrument for local entrepreneurs, with a 113% increase in new sellers live streaming in 2024. This rise shows Shopee Live's growing importance as Malaysia's go-to platform for live commerce. Local sellers recognise Shopee Live’s interactive features that facilitate direct customer engagement, allowing them to build stronger, lasting relationships. The platform’s ease of entry and real-time feedback mechanisms are proving crucial in helping businesses stand out in a competitive marketplace, create meaningful connections with their customers, and reach nationwide audiences. The adoption of Shopee Live as a key business strategy is clear, with local sellers conducting over 1.4 million livestreams and receiving more than 27 million unique comments from users this year.

Petals Malaysia2, a Selangor-based hair care brand, joined Shopee in 2021 to offer sustainable, wudhu’-friendly, Made-in-Malaysia products tailored to local preferences. Before joining Shopee, their market presence was limited to retail outlets, restricting their exposure and visibility. "Shopee provided access to a vast online audience, significantly expanding our market reach," said Khairul Azman, Founder of Petals Malaysia. "Shopee Live has also transformed our customer engagement. Through live sessions, we directly interact with shoppers, answer their questions in real time, and effectively showcase our products. This immediate engagement builds trust and drives purchases. We also use live polls and Q&A sessions to involve viewers, gather feedback, and enhance the overall shopping experience." Petals has sold over 26,000 units of their best-selling halal hair dye ‘Hair Color Shampoo’ since 2021.

The study also highlights a 65% increase in Shopee Live sellers from Malaysia’s East Coast, reflecting the platform’s success in helping local businesses expand their reach across the country. This underscores Shopee’s commitment in helping entrepreneurs from less urbanised regions to grow with e-commerce. East Coast sellers are using Shopee Live to build brand loyalty and deepen customer engagement, helping the platform create more opportunities for aspiring business-owners across Malaysia.

Shopee’s top 500 locally-owned enterprises have achieved an average of 50% year-on-year growth in 2024, demonstrating the platform’s effectiveness in driving business expansion. This success highlights the strength of Shopee’s ecosystem and its role in helping sellers innovate and grow. The ‘Sayangi Malaysia, Jom Rai Lokal 2024’ study also shows Shopee’s commitment to supporting local businesses and growing the digital economy. Shopee continues to be an important partner for homegrown businesses, offering tools and services that help sellers achieve new levels of success.

1. Study Methodology: The “Sayangi Malaysia, Jom Rai Lokal 2024” study was conducted by Shopee Malaysia with year-to-date platform data up to 31 July 2024.

2. Petals Malaysia is a Selangor-based, 100% Bumiputera business that specialises in Muslim-friendly hair care products. Their products are approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Health (KKM) and HALVEC (JAKIM Panel Laboratory).

Empowering MSMEs | How Seller Communities Propel E-commerce Success in Malaysia

After nine years of searching for his true calling and facing several failed ventures, business owner Zaid finally discovered his passion for crafting scented candles. In 2019, he launched Lampu Cherita, a homemade scented candle store. However, his excitement soon turned to frustration as he grappled with the complexities of e-commerce and the challenges of being a novice seller. Determined to make his mark, Zaid turned to Shopee for the support and knowledge he needed.

Through the e-commerce marketplace, Zaid gained access to free online training classes that empowered him with essential skills and knowledge to transform his business. The curriculum covered vital areas such as sales, marketing, and operations, offering practical strategies for driving traffic, boosting conversions, and managing inventory.

Beyond these courses, Zaid’s know-how deepened thanks to a group of certified trainers and successful sellers who shared their invaluable insights whom he met as part of the Shopee Xperts programme. Their guidance was a game-changer, enabling Zaid to apply best practices and maximise the platform's tools more effectively. With actionable advice from these seasoned professionals, Zaid made impactful improvements to his business operations, leading to tangible results and setting Lampu Cherita on a path to success.

As Zaid immersed himself in the ShopeeUni Facebook Group, a vibrant community of sellers, he also found an invaluable support network. The group became his go-to source for inspiration and advice, helping him stay ahead of industry trends and tackle challenges with fresh perspectives. The group's collaborative environment was a critical factor in his growth and success.

However, Zaid’s journey was not without its trials. In 2021, a catastrophic flood struck, causing RM100,000 in damages to his home-based business. Yet, in the face of this adversity, the Shopee community’s response was nothing short of extraordinary. Sellers and customers rallied around him, offering crucial support and helping with the cleanup of his damaged space. “Their help during my toughest times lifted a heavy burden and reminded me of the incredible bond we’ve formed. This experience deepened my gratitude and commitment to giving back,” Zaid recalls.

This outpouring of solidarity and generosity demonstrated the profound strength and unity of the e-commerce community, fueling Zaid’s resolve to rebuild and continue his journey. Driven by gratitude and armed with the knowledge he had gained, Zaid stepped into a new role as a mentor. He actively participated in the ShopeeUni Facebook Group, sharing motivational messages, practical tips, and advice on leveraging Shopee’s tools. His insights into marketing strategies, customer engagement, and product optimization quickly earned him respect within the community.

"Having faced the challenges of running a business myself, I’m deeply grateful for the support I received. I now find great fulfilment in helping others achieve success with the same guidance and encouragement that once lifted me. Supporting my community is my way of paying it forward and helping others thrive as I have," said Zaid.

In 2022, Zaid’s contributions were officially recognized when he was selected as one of the 17 Shopee Bintang members. This honour marked his transition from a successful seller to a mentor within the Shopee Bintang Komuniti Program. Zaid engaged with fellow sellers through both online and offline events, sharing his expertise during monthly Facebook Live sessions. He emphasised the importance of continuous learning, adapting to new trends, and the value of Shopee Xperts and Shopee University’s resources.

Zaid’s story is a testament to the transformative power of community support and continuous learning in the world of e-commerce. Through Shopee’s resources and the unwavering support of fellow sellers, he turned his initial struggles into a thriving business and a platform for helping others succeed.

Supporting Local Through Strategic Partnerships

For Shopee, driving Malaysia’s digital economy is about more than just providing tools and fostering a dynamic seller community; it’s about forging impactful partnerships that amplify support for local MSMEs. Recognising that collaborative efforts with government agencies and key stakeholders are crucial, Shopee enhances its role in empowering sellers through strategic partnerships with government agencies.

Programs like Pupuk@Shopee, in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission (MCMC), aim to train and empower rural eCommerce sellers via Shopee University classes held at MCMC’s rural internet centres. These classes have driven RM55 million in sales for 29,000 local sellers, boosting their average daily earnings by 22% year-on-year. Additionally, under the OKU Celik Digital Program in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications, 500 National OKU sellers were able to learn how to navigate the digital marketplace via training sessions conducted by Shopee.

“At Shopee, our commitment goes beyond providing tools. We believe in nurturing a thriving community to help our local sellers succeed in the digital age. We strive to unleash their full potential and propel Malaysia's digital economy by providing vital resources to MSMEs and building a robust seller community. Working together, we can make a lasting impact and bolster the growth of our entrepreneurs.” says Tan Ming Kit, Head of Marketing and Business Intelligence at Shopee Malaysia.

Awarded the title of Malaysia's biggest kid-preneur programme by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR), Goodday KidSTART was launched in 2022 and attracted 340 submissions from talented young minds across the nation. The inaugural programme concluded with a two-day workshop and pitching event held at Aloft, KL, where 10 year old Fatimah Basyeerah Binti Mohamed Ackiel from Dengkil and her stroke cognitive skills recovery software application, an idea born from her desire to help her grandfather who suffered a stroke, emerged as the grand prize winner, receiving RM20,000 to realise her entrepreneurial dreams.

This initiative by Goodday Milk, aims to raise awareness and promote better financial literacy among the younger generation. The study also said that only 30% of parents imparted financial literacy knowledge at a younger age while the rest either didn’t or didn’t know how to.

Hence, by empowering children with entrepreneurial skills and equipping them with the right knowledge to develop strong money habits early, Goodday Milk strives to contribute to a more secure and financially sound future for the next generation while helping parents navigate the complexities of good financial management with their children.

This year’s instalment will see a bigger and wider reach, beginning with the submission period followed by a series of online webinars on the 27th of April and 4th of May, covering 5 topics; Business Model, Design Thinking, Effective Presentation, Creative Problem Solving Skills and Environmental Entrepreneurship, with the hopes that it will spark ideas with the public and interested participants.

Adding to the reach and as a result of their endorsement by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Goodday will be hitting the road visiting schools across the country to bring the message of financial literacy and empower more children to take part in the contest. As an added incentive, a RM10,000 reward is up for grabs for the school with the highest number of participants.

Amy Gan, Etika VP of Marketing said, "Last year's Goodday KidSTART made a significant impact, showcasing the incredible creativity and potential of Malaysia's young entrepreneurs and at the same time the wealth of ideas and talent possessed by our country’s next generation. This year, we are excited to see even more innovative ideas and empower a new wave of kid-preneurs. Goodday KidSTART 2.0 is more than a competition; it's an investment in the future of our youth. Through this programme we’re committed to nourishing both the bodies and minds of the next generation by instilling in them the importance of financial literacy and at the same time boost their confidence level, creativity and growth mindset ."

“This year, we are truly honoured to have the support of the Ministry of Education. Their stamp of approval not only adds credibility to the programme but opens us up to more opportunities that will help us reach more of our younger generation. Once again, I urge parents to encourage their child’s participation and take this opportunity to showcase their talents, potential and ideas. Who knows, your child could be the next Goodday KidSTART kid-preneur!” she added.

Submissions for the Goodday KidSTART programme are open from 1st March 2024 to 31st May 2024, and parents are invited to send a short video of their children's pitch to Goodday Milk Malaysia via http://www.gooddaykidstart.com/

The video should consist of three parts;

  1. An introduction
  2. Their inspiration to start a business
  3. The quick elevator pitch of their idea

Following the two-month submission period and shortlisting process, 20 finalists will advance to the next stage to attend a 2-day intensive boot camp and finale in June 2024. Children will be mentored and taught the necessary skills and abilities to successfully pitch their ideas to a panel of judges ranging from business entrepreneurs to captains of industry.

Shopee Seller Summit Ushers in New Era of Value-Based Marketing | Stay Relevant and Drive Economic Inclusion

1,200 Malaysian sellers on Shopee’s platform unanimously resolved to stay relevant with shifting values of younger audiences online by embracing Value-Based Marketing at Shopee’s Seller Summit at Sunway Resort on 21 June 2023. The sixth instalment of Malaysia's most popular annual e-commerce conventions provided a safe space for sellers to incorporate latest online consumer trends and newly launched marketplace features in contributing to the development of local communities across various industries nationwide.

Up-ending the notion that purpose-driven business is solely the purview of large MNC corporations, ten value-based sellers set up pop-up booths to demonstrate how they drive unique values through user experience, authentic storytelling, and seamless engagement. Shopee Xpert and Shopee Bintang sellers played interactive games such as Marketplace Inclusion Treats-In-the-Jar, Building Connected Communities Jenga, and Redefining E-Commerce Pictionary, to break the ice and create memorable value-based learning experiences.

In his keynote speech, Shopee Malaysia’s Director, Cheng Xun Chua unveiled major 2023 platform initiatives focused on enabling Malaysian sellers’ growth. Firstly, Shopee is enhancing capabilities across logistics and payments, and prioritising brand protection to enable better shopping experiences for value-based customers. Secondly, Shopee is maximising customer lifetime value from its large user base by building cross-category synergy and deepening the connection between sellers and their customers, increasing shopper engagement and maximising sellers’ reach.

According to Chua, "In today's e-commerce landscape, customers pay close attention to what a seller stands for and does, by checking out what the influencers and affiliates say about the brand. With Shopee 360 Marketing Solutions, we provide a comprehensive, end-to-end platform marketing solution that includes a range of tools and services to help sellers increase their visibility and sales.”

Khairul Aming, winner of Shopee Super Award 2022 Best New Seller and Best Customer Service awards, led the call to stay relevant during his panel discussion. He was joined by esteemed fellow sellers Roy Sam of PerySmith, Kim Yeo of Ecobb,  Sammy Chong of Celovis Jewelry, and So Bee Leng of Coty Malaysia, who spoke about meeting the needs of value-based consumers to drive long-term loyalty.

He introduced Sambal Nyet on Shopee in 2021 and has made over RM 21.5 million in sales since, selling his millionth bottle last August. By constantly refreshing and customising content for Malaysians’ local preferences, he has over 3.7M followers on Instagram and consistently maintains an average of 5.0 stars ratings on Shopee with over 392.2k followers. Hailing from Kelantan, Khairul's growing business is a model of creating inclusive employment opportunities in his hometown for over 50 staff and 150 household dependents.

Kenneth Soh, Head of Marketing at Shopee Malaysia, said, “Every year, thousands of sellers network and learn new things to grow at our Seller Summit. This year, I had the privilege of facilitating first-hand (in my panel forum) very proactive value-based marketing strategies that I’m sure will drive societal and business impacts by industry. Not forgetting, I wanted to thank all the brand sponsors for contributing to the success of Seller Summit 2023: Commerce.Asia, Intrepid, Kumoten, Mono & Co, PayRecon, Red Dino, SiteGiant, and Toyo, among others.“

Exemplifying how Made-in-Malaysia stores on marketplace can drive local economic inclusion while meeting the demands of value-based shoppers through Shopee’s ecosystem were: Ooi Zhi Wei of Zhiwei Herb, Felix Lee and Tee Ying Fui of Beehaus, Karen Tee of RPM (Racing Passion Moto), Eelin Lim of BeNourish, Leon Wong of Samview, Mohd Zaid of Lampu Cherita, Edward Wong of HomeDecoStore, Khairil Adhzaha of Tokey Sambal Hitam, Patricia Marin of Mamami Shoppe, and Hafiz Oon of Mr Bentong.

Last year, Shopee upskilled and integrated over 250,000 new sellers for digital inclusion, and saw 145 new sellers record over RM500,000 in sales in the first 12 months online. In line with Shopee’s ongoing efforts to leverage the transformative power of technology to create a more inclusive digital economy, Shopee’s Seller Summit provides tools to upskill and empower sellers to achieve online success and build a sustainable future for themselves.
