guardian | World Oral Health Day Smile Brighter Live Better

According to the Malaysian Ministry of Health (MOH) in its National Oral Health Survey of Adults (NOHSA 2020), dental caries exist in 85.1% of surveyed adults (Click here). Dental caries or tooth decay prevalence rate indicates the presence of decayed, missing or filled teeth among over 8 out of 10 adult Malaysians.

While the prevalence rate has been on the decline, there is still much that industry stakeholders could do to help Malaysians achieve the National Oral Health Strategic Plan’s caries’ free targets by the end of this decade.

Therefore, in conjunction with the annual celebration of the World Oral Health Day on the 20th of March worldwide, guardian Malaysia is hosting its World Oral Health Day atrium at the 1Utama Centre Court from the 31st of March to the 5th of April, and at Midvalley Southkey, Johor Bahru.

The event is supported by the MDA and FDI World Dental Federation and is in-line with the aspirations of the MOH.

Being the No. 1 Health & Beauty Retailer* in this country, guardian Malaysia seeks to play its part in the fight against dental caries by advocating holistic wellness and elevating oral care from being merely a hygiene routine to becoming an essential part of healthcare.

The mouth is the mirror to YOUR body’s overall wellbeing

“Many are unaware about the links between oral care to systemic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Individuals who’d take oral care for granted and neglect it might have to pay a fairly high price in the future,” shared Anna Ng, Marketing Director of guardian Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.

The World Oral Health Day is designed to spark the awareness amongst Malaysians of this important but often neglected part of wellbeing care. It seeks to empower individuals with tips and knowledge to better oral health from strong teeth to fresh breath and more – all these being delivered by dental care experts and guardian pharmacists at this atrium event!

Various interactive zones at this week-long event such as the ‘Build your strong smile’, ‘Protect your mouth’ and ‘Shine with confidence’ zones have been designed to be engaging, exploratory and impactful to allow for members of the public to learn up good oral hygiene and ‘stop’ the diseases on its track via daily care and preventive habits.

guardian Malaysia expands its trust ‘circle’ to include Oral Care

Speaking at the launch of the atrium event, Priscilla Wu, Managing Director of guardian Malaysia said,

“guardian Malaysia’s role as the trusted advisor for wellness to all Malaysians now includes empowering them to adopt preventive care on their oral health as the primary defence against dental issues. This week-long event, in celebration of World Oral Health Day, is supported by the MDA and Haleon and in-line with the objectives of the MOH is our first-step towards this direction.”

The President of the Malaysian Dental Association (MDA), Dr Chong Zhen Feng said that:

“As the MDA is focused on working constructively with industry stakeholders to better serve the interest of the public, we are delighted to be part of this public outreach platform by guardian Malaysia that celebrates World Oral Health Day with various talks, free dental check-ups and the presence of oral care experts during this week-long event for shoppers to improve their daily hygiene and routines.”

Besides the MDA, representatives from the Oral Health Programme (OHP), Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM ) as well as the deans of the dentistry faculties of International Medical University (IMU) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) were also present at the event as they lend their dental expertise and support to make this week-long atrium a success.

Dental check-ups and consultations are provided via enclosed, private booths at the atrium from 12 noon to 6 pm on the 31st of March as well as on the 3rd to the 5th of April. There will be stage activities on topics of interest by BioMed, Colgate, Darlie, Henry Blooms and Sensodyne at selected hours in the afternoons in the upcoming weekend.

“We are proud to be a stakeholder partner of the MDA in serving the oral care interest of the public and are thankful to them and Haleon for their support of free dental check-ups and consultations for the public at this atrium,” added Priscilla.

Happiness all around, especially for MYguardian Rewards’ members

“In-line with the atrium’s aptly named theme of ‘A happy mouth is a happy life’, the preventive measures and hacks learnt should be inculcated as part of new routines and habits in the lives of our shoppers across all ages from the kids and teens to the young adults, family men and women as well as the senior citizens. But, the happiness does not stop there,” Anna added.

There are exclusive MYguardian Rewards’ members-only promotions during the atrium:

Teal Asia Calls for Greater Cervical Cancer Screening Awareness

In conjunction with Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, Teal Asia, Malaysia’s first peer‑to‑peer support movement, hosted an afternoon program to spotlight the urgent need for prevention and resilience in the fight against cervical cancer.

The event emphasized the importance of screening and early detection, complementing the decade‑long work of the ROSE Foundation, whose efforts to make HPV screening accessible have been sustained through donations. Teal Asia underscored that awareness alone is not enough, corporations and communities must step forward to support these initiatives so that more women can access life‑saving screenings.

Selina Yeop Jr., the founder of Teal Asia and a World Health Organisation (WHO) recognised patient advocate, reminded participants that prevention must come first. “Cervical cancer is the only cancer that can be prevented and all it takes is just two HPV screenings in your lifetime,” she urged.

She also emphasised that the journey does not end once treatment is completed. “Healing doesn’t stop at survival. Survivors face lingering symptoms; wellness and complementary care help us manage the after‑effects and regain strength to truly live well.”

Hosted in collaboration with Hava Wellness Centre, Malaysia’s first integrated hydrogen therapy facility, the program highlighted that wellness is not a luxury but a necessity in recovery. The WHO has reaffirmed that palliative and supportive care are vital in managing the effects of cancer treatment; a message Teal Asia echoes by encouraging survivors to embrace holistic healing as part of their journey.

Guests were also offered the opportunity to undergo HPV screening and experience wellness therapies after the program, reinforcing the message of prevention and integrated care.

Teal Asia reaffirmed its commitment to raising awareness, encouraging screenings, and building resilience among patients and survivors. The movement continues to call on corporations, donors, and the wider public to contribute to this cause, reminding Malaysians that cervical cancer is preventable and can be eliminated if collective action is taken.

The event concluded with a call to action to make cervical health a national priority and to work collectively toward achieving the WHO’s Global Goal of Cervical Cancer Elimination by 2030.

Happy 57th Birthday guardian Malaysia | Marks its 57th Birthday by Continuing to Nurture the Beauty and Wellbeing of Malaysians

guardian Malaysia celebrates its 57th year of operations with a series of activities that reinforce its commitment to nurturing the beauty and wellbeing of Malaysians. These activities include:

Pink October campaign in collaboration with Kundal and The National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) to raise awareness, expand access, and drive action in the nation’s fight against breast cancer.

The launch of new, exclusive beauty and wellbeing brands in guardian Malaysia’s stores nationwide and online, culminating in an official event later this month at guardian The Exchange TRX mall to celebrate these exciting new offerings.

An exclusive 57% discount promotion on the purchase of the second item across 3,000 products, available both in-store and online throughout the month.

Through these initiatives, guardian Malaysia aims to remind and encourage Malaysians from all walks of life to prioritize nurturing their own beauty and wellbeing.

Anna Ng, Marketing Director of guardian Malaysia, emphasized:

“Outer beauty and inner wellbeing require daily nurturing. This includes having knowledge about what’s good for you and being able to access the ‘right choice’ of beauty and wellbeing products.”

Pink October: Guardian Malaysia Steps Up in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Breast cancer remains the #1 cancer affecting women in Malaysia, with 1 in 19 women being diagnosed. Due to a lack of awareness and low rates of early detection—especially among lower-income households—nearly half of the cases are only confirmed in the late stages (Stages 3 and 4).

This has resulted in a low 5-year survival rate of 66.8% which is much lower than other Asian countries such as Singapore (79%), South Korea (92.6%), and Japan (96.2%).

Early detection is crucial in combating breast cancer. In partnership with Kundal and The National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM), guardian Malaysia will introduce an exclusive Pink Glove breast self-examination kit.

It includes a scrub glove with self-examination steps, two bottles of body wash, and one body scrub, retailing at RM23.88.

For every Pink Glove kit sold, part of proceeds will be contributed to NCSM to support work in education, awareness, and early detection programs for breast cancer.

Additionally, 10,000 Pink Glove kits will be set aside and distributed by NCSM to underprivileged women across Malaysia.

Dr. Murallitharan Munisamy
, Managing Director of NCSM, said:

“We are grateful to guardian Malaysia for stepping up efforts to improve access to breast cancer self-examinations. The Pink Glove kit, coupled with the awareness campaign, donation drive, and distribution to underprivileged women, offers a holistic approach to addressing breast cancer across all demographics.”

Throughout Pink October, guardian will run a digital campaign to raise awareness about early detection, including a video by Dr. Tan Gie Hooi, Breast & Oncoplastic Surgeon, on the importance of early detection.

Additionally, NCSM will host informative sessions on breast cancer awareness at guardian The Exchange TRX mall from 21 to 27 October 2024, alongside educational and screening campaigns targeting underprivileged communities at Program Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) Hiliran Ampang.
