Malaysian teacher named regional winner of the 2024 Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards

The International Education group at Cambridge University Press & Assessment (Cambridge) today announced Sydney Engelbert, an English language teacher at Keningau Vocational College in Sabah, as the regional winner of the 2024 Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards in Malaysia.

The Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards is a global competition that celebrates the achievements of teachers around the world. Now in its sixth year, the competition highlights the important role that teachers play in shaping the lives of their learners and preparing them for the world. It gives students, parents and peers the chance to nominate a current primary or secondary teacher for outstanding commitment to their students’ education.

As a regional winner, Sydney Engelbert will win £500 worth of books for their class, a trophy, take part in a regional awards ceremony and receive publicity for them and their school during the coming year. They will also appear on a ‘thank you’ page at the front of new Cambridge textbooks.

Sydney Engelbert has been named the regional winner in Southeast Asia & Pacific, for her commitment to cross-cultural collaboration, which helped to develop her students’ communication skills. Sydney teaches at a rural school in Keningau, Sabah, where her students will rarely leave the district. The judges praised Syndey’s role in enriching her students’ education despite this isolation. Notably, Sydney kickstarted an online exchange class in 2022 with several other vocational schools in Malaysia, the Philippines, Cambodia and Indonesia. Khalifa Affnan, also from Keningau Vocational College, won the Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards 2022.

“I am greatly honoured to be awarded with this recognition. It’s important that we create a learning environment rooted in cultural exchange to help students develop the practical and communication skills needed for the future. I am deeply proud of the success my students have had as part of our online exchange class that is centred around cultural competence and exploring topics beyond the standard curriculum,” said Sydney.

A global competition

2024 saw a record number of nominations from people wanting to thank a teacher. Cambridge received 14,840 nominations across 141 different countries, topping the previous record by over 1,000 nominations.

Rod Smith, Managing Director of International Education said, “We need 44 million teachers worldwide by 2030 if the world is to meet the UNESCO Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 of inclusive and equitable quality education. For this to happen, at Cambridge we believe we should be celebrating the profession and highlighting the hard-working teachers currently instilling a love of learning, often in difficult environments.

“We launched the Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards to ensure we took the time to thank those preparing their students to be ready for the world, whether tackling challenging educational issues like climate change or breaking down cultural barriers. I wish to congratulate Sydney Engelbert for their immense accomplishments, which I’m sure will inspire teachers and learners across Malaysia.”

The public can now vote on their favourite teacher out of the nine regional winners, to become the overall winner of Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards 2024. The deadline to vote is 6 May 2024 and the Global Winner will be announced on 29 May 2024.

FedEx Lights Up Malaysia’s Iconic Kuala Lumpur Tower to Celebrate Milestone 50th Anniversary

FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and one of the world's largest express transportation companies, celebrated its anniversary by lighting up the Kuala Lumpur Tower, one of the tallest structures in Southeast Asia, in shades of the official FedEx colors purple and orange on April 17.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of FedEx worldwide and the 30th anniversary of FedEx in Malaysia. To celebrate this significant milestone, the company had the Kuala Lumpur Tower lit up to express its commitment to its customers and its gratitude for being welcomed as a member of the community for decades.

FedEx began its operations on April 17, 1973, in Memphis, Tennessee, with 389 team members and 14 aircrafts. On that first night, the company delivered 186 packages to 25 cities across the United States. Now, the company employs nearly 530,000 employees worldwide and ships 16.5 million packages daily across the globe.

Over time, FedEx expanded its services to include international destinations, launching its first international services in Asia and Europe in 1984. In 1993, the company introduced direct services to customers in Malaysia, further expanding its global reach and capabilities. FedEx in Malaysia launched a transpacific next day service for Penang in 1997 and opened a facility in Batu Kawan to strengthen the network and meet local customer demand in 2020.

At this important milestone, FedEx is committed to stay ahead of the supply chain curve by focusing on best-in-class innovations that will pave the way for the future.

FedEx team members across Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa (AMEA) including Malaysia came together with those across the globe to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary through 50 Days of Caring. Team members supported the communities they serve every day by volunteering their time and donating items to agencies in need.

Whether it was through refurbishing schools and hospitals or cleaning up parks and beaches, giving back is part of the company’s culture. FedEx also recently announced it exceeded its FedEx Cares 50 by 50 goal of helping 50 million people by its 50th birthday.

ShopeeFood Rewards Female Driver Partners in Special Women’s Day Celebration With Love

In conjunction with International Women's Day celebrations in the month of March, ShopeeFood hosted a special event as a show of appreciation for women driver partners in Klang Valley. The event was supported by several leading brands such as NIVEA, Marrybrown, Chatime and L'Oréal Malaysia. Almost 60 female riders, accompanied by their friends, participated in the event to celebrate the day.

In addition to the collaboration with leading brand partners, ShopeeFood also provided a personal development program led by an expert in the field of humanities and social studies: Associate Professor Dr Hadija Mohd, who has developed the Personal Initiative Intelligence (PI-Q) framework.

The PI-Q framework aims to build essential soft-skills to help driver partners improve their job performance. The unique approach focuses on developing the inner qualities of an individual, such as resilience, self-awareness, and empathy.

At the end of the program, three selected driver partners were recognised for their participation and given an opportunity to continue their education with a scholarship in a recognised higher education program. ShopeeFood selected the City Continued Education Centre to partner for the scholarship that’s valued at more than RM60,000.

According to Kwa Yin Leng, Head of Operations for ShopeeFood Malaysia, the celebration is an important milestone in recognising women’s contribution to the food delivery industry. “ShopeeFood aims to provide our female driver partners a supportive environment so they feel valued, safe and recognised. We are happy to be partnering with various brands and showcase our efforts in a meaningful way. The learning programs will go a long way in upskilling our riders and hopefully impact their lives for the better,” she said.

In addition to the personal development class, the driver partners were also treated to a self-care workshop hosted by NIVEA. The experts from NIVEA helped the riders learn healthy skincare and good hygiene habits as riders are often exposed to changing weather conditions while doing their work. At the end of the session, the female driver partners were also given NIVEA products to kickstart their regime.

The highlight of the event was a panel session that was also live-streamed on the Shopee app and social platforms. The lively discussion featured three popular figures from different backgrounds sharing their personal stories of immense challenges and how it led them to success. The panellists were:

● Datuk Shalin Zulkifli, a professional bowler and athlete who has represented Malaysia for 28 years in numerous international competitions. She currently holds five world championship titles and is a fierce advocate for gender equality.

● Nandini Balakrishnan is a known influencer and video producer with a popular media company. She has written extensively on issues related to the discrimination and her work has been featured in major publications around the world. In 2021, Nandini was also awarded the Women of the Future Awards Southeast Asia in the ‘Arts & Culture’ category. This award recognises achievements of female trailblazers across industries.

● Natasha Helwa Binti Ramlee, is a young female entrepreneur and a ShopeeFood merchant. She is the eldest of three siblings that founded the popular restaurant franchise of ‘Tiga Budak Gemok’. While the restaurant may have had humble beginnings of starting off under a tree, the business today has rapidly grown and expanded to cover more than six states in Malaysia.

To end the day, driver partners were treated to a sumptuous lunch sponsored by Marrybrown and Chatime Malaysia. The riders feasted on Nasi Lemak MB by Marrybrown and a variety of bestselling bubble tea drinks like Grass Jelly Roasted Milk Tea, Mango QQ, Lychee QQ, Passionfruit QQ from Chatime Malaysia.

The riders also went home with skincare giveaway from L'Oréal Malaysia consisting of L'Oréal Paris products valued at approximately RM12,000.
