Madam Kwan | Share Her Untold Story And Beloved Recipes With Us!

Many of us are familiar with Madam Kwan’s – a restaurant where you can’t go wrong when it comes to showcasing truly Malaysian cuisine with its delicious curries, rendangs and signature rice dishes – but what about the smiling lady in the hat and glasses herself?

Her name is actually Madam Kwan Swee Lian and the 83-year old is still up at the crack of dawn every day to oversee the food preparations in the central kitchen and a familiar sight at the Pavilion Kuala Lumpur outlet during the day with her friendly figure, large framed glasses and signature hat.

Paying tribute to the grande dame who speaks Cantonese and Bahasa Malaysia, the family-owned business has published a biography sharing Kwan’s rich life story while featuring her favourite recipes from her childhood as well as from Madam Kwan’s.

Written by her granddaughter, Catherine Foo, “Madam Kwan: Her Untold Story And BelovedRecipes” tells the tale of how a tenacious and enterprising beauty salon businesswoman with no cooking experience moved into the restaurant business to eventually build a successful enterprise with her son Rudy and daughter-in-law, Rudy and Maureen Ooi.

Today, Madam Kwan’s is present in the country’s top shopping malls – Suria KLCC, Pavilion KL, Mid Valley Megamall, Bangsar Shopping Centre, One Utama Shopping Centre, Empire Shopping Gallery and Sunway Pyramid, and also in Genting Highlands Resort.

The biography also touches on her personal life and the heart-breaking loss of her eldest son and his family in the 1993 Highland Towers tragedy followed by the loss of yet another son within a decade; providing a rare glimpse of Swee Lian’s strength, determination and ability to overcome the adversities thrown her way.

Having cooked with passion for over 60 years, it is no surprise that the biography is interwoven with delicious recipes that reflects her Hakka background as well as favourites from Madam Kwan’s Western and Malaysian menu.

Twenty-five recipes have been handpicked including classic favourites from the restaurant such as the Hainanese Chicken Chop, fragrant Petai Prawns, creamy Curry Fish Head and iconic Nasi Bojari.

“Behind the famous Madam Kwan’s brand and delicious food is a compelling tale of a woman with gumption, resilience and courage that few are aware of. As her granddaughter, I am very proud to be able to honour this extraordinary woman and her immense determination and talent. She is a truly amazing lady, and I think her story, told here for the first time in detail, is testament to how strong and spirited she is. I hope you enjoy reading about my Grandma as much as I have enjoyed learning more about her,” said Foo during the launch.

The humble Kwan attributes her success over the years to customers, family, staff and suppliers. “Success is not my own. I have to thank my family for their patience, loyalty and hard work to run the business. Also having wonderful support from both staff and suppliers throughout the years at both Madam Kwan’s and the earlier Sakura businesses eases my burden while the smiles and satisfied looks on customers’ faces as they leave my restaurants make it all worthwhile for me,” said Madam Kwan Swee Lian.

Celebrating her rich life and contribution to promoting Malaysian cuisine, local celebrities and business partners joined close family members at the launch, where the brand also introduced the new Madam Kwan’s Curry Paste that is infused with aromatic spices such as turmeric, lemongrass, shrimp paste and candlenut.

With the convenient ready-made curry paste, fans of Madam Kwan’s signature dishes can recreate the delicious flavours of its popular tender beef rendang, chicken curry, fish head curry and curry laksa at home.

Capture A Truly Family Playtime Moments Together With Weplay | We Play, We Learn, We Laugh !

Play was mouse mommy’s childhood memories. Through play, we can engage in an activity for fun, explore, experiment, learn, think creative, experience and bonding together. Therefore, mouse mommy loves to play with children so much!

Mouse mommy and family joining a We Play Family Get Together event that organized by WeplayMalaysia and Motherhood.com.my . A great family bonding activities together as in we stack, fishing, play, crawl, balancing, guess and have creative fun play interaction moments.

Mouse mommy loves the Weplay concept that promotes motor skills development, balance co-ordination, fine motor skills improvement, tactile perception and creative play interaction that encourage in development of emotion, attention, event recognition and self confidence.

A fun-filled day out with family! MR & MH enjoying play so much together with mouse mommy and mouse papa, and of course, their new friends too! There are three interactive plays take place, which is Save The Princess, Unlock The Mystery and The Boss Baby.

Save The Princess is a story base activities events that the emcee guides us from the adventure to save the princess by building up a banana boat and banana bridge using Weplay Cookie Festival. We got to put in all the ‘happy face cookiemen’ into a banana shape like rocking bar act as boat and the most challenging part was need to get the balance point of it to make all the ‘happy face cookiemen’ stay happily without falling down.

After we safely shipped the princess, we got another challenge, which was needed to cross the banana bridge with princess. We were turned around the banana boat and make it as a banana bridge with stacked and gathered all the ‘happy face cookiemen’ together-gather. MR and mouse papa love to played and stacked these ‘happy face cookiemen’ as in it need to think on how make sure all the cookiemen got stable and balance on the banana bridge. Weplay cookie festival was able to enrich creative thinking from 2D piecing to 3D stacking games and enhance MR’s fine movement stability through unlimited stacking fun.

MR and mouse papa were really pay attention and patience in stacking those ‘happy face cookiemen’. Haha! Definitely improve their concentration and frustration tolerance through the stacking process. A good training for children!

Unlock The Mystery – Beans or Beads was a simple yet fun interactive play. It can stimulate auditory or hearing skills by stuffed cookiemen and shake to make different sounds. The kids got to listen carefully and make a guess ‘What is inside’? Baby MH loves this play session so much. The two unit of ‘happy face cookiemen’ was in vibrant recognizable colours which was strawberry red and light brown.

Baby MH was holding tightly the apple green ‘happy face cookiemen’ to shake, listen, bite and have fun with it. Even mouse mommy wanted to got it from him also not allow to do so. Baby MH loves it so much! Jeng…jeng…jeng… Time to make a guess! What are the items inside the ‘happy face cookiemen’ body? MR was guessed pearl beads while mouse papa guessed green beans. Mouse mommy was guessed maybe red beans inside. Haha! Good try mouse mommy. Here was the result as per photos.

The second interactive play was The Boss Baby, kids were required to stand and balance their body weight on Weplay Rocking Seesaw. Mouse mommy likes the anti-slip safety designs that make sure our kids were play safe and avoiding slip on the floor and get injured. Weplay Rocking Seesaw can promote children coordination development.

The third interactive play- Future Architect was awesome and everyone enjoying so much including the adults and children! We are in the group 1 that required building a tower by using Weplay Icy Ice Building Set. At first, mouse mommy was quite skeptical on it as in experience before with similar design toy that hard to interlock and disassemble the blocks.

MR was excited to create and build up a tower with the team. Mouse mommy saw MR was happily and easily to assembly and disassembly the icy block with his favourite green colour icy blocks. Wow! Mouse mommy was try it out as well and love the high quality of the hollow large icy plastic blocks and the great inter-locking design that allows icy blocks to lock each others into place easily as well as efficient n storage too!

Weplay Icy Ice Building Set able to develop a sense of creativity, spatial awareness and visual thinking with thousands of constructive possibilities. Other than that, it is also able to enhance hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills while assembling and constructing the icy blocks.

Another group was building a KLCC Twin Towers by using Weplay Q-Blocks, which were large soft bricks. Adults and children both are have fun and enjoying the blocks building together.

While the third group was build up a house using the Weplay We-Block Minis. There are different textures on the panels that able to different tactile stimulation with five different colourful shapes. Mouse mommy likes it as in it able to promote confidence through construction, imagination, creative displays, expressing talents and teamwork.

The last group was using the lightweight, soft and durable Weplay softwood blocks to build a cho-cho train. Multiple design and shapes allows the kids to create and build up beyond imagination! Besides that, it is also able to cultivate structural understanding and spatial concepts.

Last but not least, we also feeling lucky that MR won a Weplay Q-Blocks via lucky draw. Wow! That's MR favourite bricks building activities. MR and MH both enjoying to stack the Weplay Q-Blocks and promote interactions and cooperation between both of them. Thanks Weplay for the Cool winning prize!

Wow! We are really have an educational family fun play day with family and friends together! Mouse mommy loves the Weplay concept that We Play, We Learn. The most fantastic point was parents can also join in play together with our lovely kids, a truly ‘We Play’ together!
