Shop for a Cause, Shop for H.O.P.E.

The Covid-19 outbreak has affected everyone,  including animals, to varying degrees. According to non-profit organisation Homeless &  Orphan Pets Exist (H.O.P.E), there has been a 30% increase in animal abandonment at the  animal shelter during the Movement Control Order. This is possibly due to the growing  financial burden that pet owners are facing.

Understandably, with the current economic climate, donations to the H.O.P.E animal shelter  located in Pekan Nenas, Johor have reduced greatly. Daily, H.O.P.E feeds an average of 1.2  tonnes (1,200 kg) of pet food to over 3,000 dogs and 200 cats that it is currently sheltering.  This works out to more than RM140,000 needed to ensure these furry friends are fed on a  monthly basis; and this is on top of the RM20,000 incurred for medical expenses and  miscellaneous.

With the goal of improving the lives of pets through nutrition, shelter and education, pet care  product brands WHISKAS® and PEDIGREE® are collaborating with H.O.P.E. animal shelter  to raise funds via the “Shop for H.O.P.E.” campaign on Shopee happening from now till 6  December 2020.

Through this campaign, Shopee users and pet lovers can make donations of RM10, RM20 or  even RM50 to the animal shelter. Additionally, for every purchase made through the Whiskas  and Pedigree Official Store on Shopee, 10% will be converted to products which will later be  presented to H.O.P.E.

Mars Petcare Southeast Asia Pet Nutrition D-Commerce Director Phua Fui Ching said,  “Ever so often, we come across a news article or video on social media on animals being  abandoned and it is heart-wrenching. At Mars Petcare, we believe that pets make the world a  better place and therefore, collaborating with H.O.P.E as well as Shopee is one of the many  initiatives to achieve our goal in creating a better world for pets where they are healthy, happy and welcomed.

Through this partnership, we hope to raise at least RM10,000 worth of pet  food to be donated to H.O.P.E to help ease their burden.”

In a bid to garner more proceeds for the animal shelter, WHISKAS® and PEDIGREE® will  also be offering in-store vouchers of RM7 off with a minimum spend of RM70 and RM10 off  with a minimum spend of RM100 to encourage pet lovers to purchase more from the store.

TYCTTV: The Future Advocate Poetry and Storytelling Competition For Kids 4 to 12 Years Old

Good opportunity for stay home kids to join this Poetry and Storytelling competition. Newman Drama collaborates with Royal Canin Malaysia to launch the TYCTTV: The Future Advocate Poetry & Storytelling Competition starting 19 October 2020. The competition that opens to all children between the ages of 4 and 12 is part of Royal Canin’s “Take Your Cat to the Vet” initiative that has been continuously organised annually since 2016.

Submission deadline is EXTENDED! NOTE: POST your entries by 12noon, 24/11 (Tuesday), late entries will not be considered.
And the "Likes & Shares" until 11:59pm, 25/11 will be accounted.

“Newman Drama wants to encourage young children especially to build the confidence to face real-life scenarios such as group interactions, oral communications, interpersonal skills and many more. With the recent announcement of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) that limits our physical classes, this competition couldn’t have launched at a better timing. We hope that children in Malaysia will take this opportunity to present and recite poetry, and share their stories about their favourite topic - their beloved cats!” said Siew Yong, Founder and Director, Newman Drama. “While we offer physical classes in the Klang Valley and Penang, now with the online competition, we can reach out to more children across the nation”.

The collaboration was signed to encourage more children to sharpen and showcase their talent in creative communications and public speaking. “Other than providing this platform for our future generation to express themselves and share their own insights, Royal Canin hopes to educate them about the importance of veterinary care for cats. We know that children love cats for the cute and playful nature, but we also need to teach them the proper steps to caring for our furry little friends - the type of food the cats need to maintain their overall health and shiny coat, the regular check-ups, the grooming and other aspects of pet care. With the collaboration with Newman Drama School, children can begin to cultivate the values of animal welfare from a very young age,” said Dr. Melissa Phoon, Corporate Affairs Manager, Royal Canin Malaysia.

The online competition is divided into two categories, poetry recital for children between the ages of 4 and 7 years old and the storytelling for those between the ages of 8 and 12 years old. Interested participants can send in a 3-minute video talking about taking their cats to the vet to qualify for the competition after playing an educational web game on cat care via link: www.animalhappiness.asia/mycat2vet

Once the video is ready for upload on the Newman Drama’s Facebook Event Page, the participants must tag @royalcaninMY and include the hashtags: #cat2vet, #tycttv #newmandrama for the judges to review.

“Newman Drama and Royal Canin will contribute up to 70% of the total evaluation, so the children are required to include their stories or experience taking their cats to the vet for extra marks. Meanwhile, likes and shares on Social Media platforms will contribute to the remaining 30%,” Siew Yong added. “In conclusion, we’d like the children to share their sweet memories with their cats, hoping that they will continue to value their pets as part of their family members through this Social Media competition”.

The competition will run until 18th November 2020. Each child is entitled for one entry. Attractive cash prizes, certificates and medals worth more than RM1,200 are up for grabs!

Associate Professor Dr. Shyamala Ratnayeke studies the ecology and conservation of tropical mammals and the biology of invasive species.

Associate Professor Dr. Shyamala Ratnayeke

In 2002, she received an International Research Fellowship Award from the US National Science Foundation to conduct research on wild carnivores in Sri Lanka, including a pioneering study on the sloth bear. She began work on the ecology and population genetics of sun bears and invasive apple snails when she joined Sunway University.

The unveiling of this particular research project on sun bears shows reflects the development of conservation educational programs between Sunway Lagoon and Sunway University.

Sun Bear

All Asian bears are threatened by habitat loss and poaching for body parts that are commercially valuable for traditional Asian medicine and cuisine.

The collaboration between the university and Sunway Lagoon is to create greater awareness among visitors of the problems faced by sun bears and to inspire action that will help to conserve our unique native wildlife.

Sun Bear info

There are two subspecies of sun bears in Malaysia, the Malayan subspecies (Helarctos malayanus malayanus) is found in Peninsular Malaysia and the Bornean subspecies (Helarctos malayanus euryspilus) is found in Borneo. It is relatively difficult to differentiate between subspecies based on physical characteristics, although Bornean sun bears are smaller on average; therefore, research on the species’ phylogeny is important. Sun bears are listed as Totally Protected Wildlife under the Second Schedule of our Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.

Dr. Shyamala collaborates with Dr. Jactty Chew, a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences, Sunway University. They’ve obtained funding from Sunway University, Lancaster University, and three years of funding from the International Association for Bear Research and Management (IBA) Grant for their research on landscape characteristics and population genetic structure of Sun bears in Malaysia.

One of the projects aims to assess genetic variation of sun bears in Malaysia, and Sunway Lagoon is pleased to contribute genetic samples from the sun Bear in the wildlife park. Together with other samples offered by PERHILITAN (Department of Wildlife and National Park) and BSBCC (Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre), the first study to evaluate genetic divergence between peninsula and Bornean subspecies has been made possible.

Dr. Elizabeth also said, “A small act of kindness and compassion towards a single animal today is the very act which will ensure the sustainability of the fellow creatures who share the earth with us. As joint inhabitants of this planet we need to protect each other, preserve the environment and ensure the future.
