Positive Parenting | Malaysia’s First Expert-Endorsed 360° Growth & Development Toolkit for Parents And Children

As reported in the latest National Health and Morbidity Survey 2022, Malaysian children continue to suffer from the double burden of malnutrition. What is more alarming is that a whopping 80.3% of parents are unaware if their child is overweight, and 74.4% are unaware if their child is too thin for their height.

In addition to nutritional deficiencies, 7.4% of children under the age of five face delays in the development of crucial skills like speech skills, social skills, and fine and gross motor skills.

With this in mind, Positive Parenting, by the Malaysian Paediatric Association (MPA) has launched the 360° Growth
& Development Toolkit, an all-in-one reference toolkit developed by key medical experts designed specifically to help Malaysian parents track and monitor their child’s growth and development from birth to five years of age. This toolkit is available in English, with pull-out materials containing both Bahasa Malaysia and English content.

Combining comprehensive growth and development trackers, this toolkit is all about educating parents, especially the first-timers, on putting children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years. With an integral focus on four essential components: Child Growth, Child Development, Child Health, and Child Nutrition and Healthy Living, this toolkit also features integrated QR codes to provide easy access to additional reading resources.

In his opening speech, Datuk Dr Zulkifli Ismail, Consultant Paediatrician and Chairman of the Positive Parenting Management Committee, also shared “The toolkit will be distributed nationwide and can be redeemed for free at participating clinics. Parents can also request for a delivery of the toolkit from Positive Parenting with a minimal postage and handling charge. You can learn more about this toolkit by visiting Positive Parenting’s website.”

Officiating the momentous launch event was Yang Berhormat Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri, the Malaysian Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development, together with key healthcare and medical experts, child educators and relevant industry stakeholders.

Yang Berhormat Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri voiced her keen support on this novel toolkit in her speech, “Let us embrace this new initiative with enthusiasm and commitment, ensuring that every child in Malaysia receives the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.” She further added, “I believe that these kinds of initiatives will play a crucial role in helping parents navigate this important period in their child’s life, and act as an invaluable resource that will shape the lives of countless children and pave the way for a brighter future for our nation.”

Another key highlight of the launch was a media dialogue featuring panellists, Datuk Dr Zulkifli Ismail, Dr Norazlin Kamal Nor, Dr Cindy Chan Su Huay and Dr Roseline Yap Wai Kuan, all of whom were behind the development of the Positive Parenting 360° Growth & Development Toolkit.

During the dialogue, the panellists answered questions about the current status of children’s health, growth and development in Malaysia post-pandemic, as well as the rationale behind the introduction of the toolkit.

The panellists also urged all stakeholders to work together in promoting child health in Malaysia and hoped that the 360° Growth & Development Toolkit will benefit many parents out there in their parenting journey.
