What are post-acne marks, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (‘PIH’)?

PIH is a type of hyperpigmentation of the skin that is triggered by our skin’s regeneration process after inflammation. It appears as flat spots of hyper colouration. These range in colour from pink to red, brown, or black, depending on skin tone and the depth of hyper colouration. The root cause is the increased melanin production, the pigment that defines the colour of a person’s skin, which is stimulated by inflammatory factors. The acne triggers melanocytes – the melanin-producing cells – to release excessive melanosomes (pigment granules). The excessive pigment granules darken and discolour the formerly stressed area. Once initial acne has subsided, spots of hyper colouration, so-called acne marks, can remain.

What is the recommended usage for best effects? 

Twice daily usage of the Eucerin ProACNE Solution Triple Effect Serum in the morning and evening. Apply one full pump to thoroughly cleansed skin. A slight tingling sensation may occur which is harmless and will fade after minutes. Avoid eye area and highly inflamed acne.

 

Is exposure to sunlight after applying the products a problem?

No, exposure to sunlight after applying the products is not a problem. However, skin areas prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation should be limited to sun exposure, as sun exposure can cause sun-induced skin damage such as skin darkening at the affected patches and prolonging the time it takes for them to fade. 

Therefore, it is recommended to use the Eucerin ProACNE Solution Day Bright Mattifying SPF30 in addition to the Triple Effect Serum since it includes broad-spectrum ultraviolet radiation filters that protect skin from both UVA and UVB rays.
