Educational World Digestive Health Day 2018 With Vitagen Malaysia!

The organisers of WDHD 2018, namely the VITAGEN Healthy Digestion Programme together with Digestive Health Malaysia Society (DHM), hope to encourage and promote optimal digestive health amongst the Malaysian public through community education campaigns and initiatives.

DHM is an expert-driven, digestive health body that seeks to empower all Malaysians to manage their digestive health with confidence and optimism, thereby reducing the prevalence of digestive health diseases. Other collaborators of the WDHD 2018 celebration include Nutrition Month Malaysia, Positive Parenting Programme, and National Cancer Council.

WDHD is an annual event that caters to the whole family, and this year, it was held at Main Atrium, Ground Floor, Sunway Velocity Mall from 28 June-1 July 2018, 10am-10pm. Members of the public learned more about digestive health from the experts. It showcased many exciting activities such as free health screenings, distribution of free stool test kits, interactive 3D mural, public video screening, expert consultations, kids colouring contest, and exhilarating fitness demonstration.

Mouse mommy and kids have fun too at the World Digestive Health Day 2018 roadshow that we can drink Vitagen, get to understand and know the important of digestive health for adults and kids.

The final results of a landmark local research conducted at Pusat Perubatan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (PPUKM) were revealed recently. The research was over a one-and-a-half year period and its results were highly relevant as it was based on Malaysians as research subjects.

The research team, led by Principle Investigator and Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist Assoc Professor Dr Raja Affendi Raja Ali, found scientific evidence linking regular consumption of probiotics with significant enhancement to the research subjects’ immune system. The probiotics were provided in the form of cultured milk drinks that contain Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus paracasei.

Assoc Professor Dr Raja Affendi shares, “The results of this study clearly prove that these two probiotic strains also significantly enhance immune system homeostasis, meaning that the immune system’s ability to sustain a favourable balance is maintained.”

Three pro-inflammatory markers that related to the chronic inflammatory diseases or even cancers, namely tumour necrosis factor-alpha, Interleukin 6, and Interleukin 8, were examined in detail among the healthy subjects and patients with irritable bowel syndrome. The researchers found significant reductions in all three markers among the majority of the research subjects.

The research had already determined that probiotics provided Malaysian research subjects with positive benefits to their digestive health. Significant improvements were reported:
Ø  96% of research subjects reported improvements in constipation symptoms,
Ø  45% of research subjects spent less than 10 minutes in the toilet,
Ø  36% of research subjects experienced less straining when going to toilet,
Ø  31% of research subjects reported softer stools,
Ø  Food digestion time is faster by 33% whereby it normally takes 20-45 hours, which was reduced by 5-15 hours.

All the results of this landmark local research were also presented at the premier International Digestive Disease Forum in Hong Kong earlier this month.

The results were announced at the launch of the World Digestive Health Day (WDHD 2018) celebrations on June 30 at Sunway Velocity Mall. On hand to officiate the launch was Deputy Director General of Health (Public Health), Ministry of Health Malaysia, YBhg Dato’ Dr Hj Azman Bin Hj Abu Bakar. During his opening speech, he acknowledged the significance of the study’s results when taking into account the dire state of the digestive health of many Malaysians.

The Health Facts 2017 released by the Ministry of Health shows that diseases of the digestive system were the fourth principal cause of hospitalisation in private hospitals, seventh principal cause of hospitalisation in MOH hospitals, and sixth principal cause of death recorded in both MOH and private hospitals,” he reveals.

He went on to add that many factors contributed to this, such as colorectal cancer and obesity. “Both the private and government sectors must work together actively in order to successfully tackle this problem. Persistent and focused efforts are necessary if we are to succeed in lowering the incidence of digestive diseases in the future,” he divulges.

Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Bin Abu Hassan, the Chairman of DHM, elaborates, “It is our hope that the results of this study is useful in creating greater synergy among the government, academia, industry and the community, thus producing solutions to the poor digestive health that many Malaysians currently face.”

Mr Poh Eng Lip, General Manager of VITAGEN, reveals, “We have always been a strong advocate of prevention and a staunch supporter of various community programmes that focus on raising awareness of the importance of digestive health.”

“This year, we are pleased that by collaborating closely with experts from PPUKM, we have gained a better understanding of how probiotics can improve digestive health and enhance the immune system. The study found evidence on the efficacy of the probiotic strains in our cultured milk drinks, namely Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus paracasei. We are greatly encouraged by the positive results of this research, which was proven by the research and is backed by scientific data and statistics.”

MR and MH play some mini sport game on the spot and have fun. We are also having family photography with the interactive 3D mural. Nice! An educational and family fun roadshow.

The ‘Eat, Speak and Smile with Confidence’ forum brought together experts, denture wearers and members of the media in a highly interactive session which encouraged attendees to speak openly about their experiences living with dentures and the challenges they faced. By publicly initiating the conversation about dentures, the event aimed to address their impact on wearers, both physically and emotionally, and drive exchange in denture-wearing solutions.

Alycia Tan, Marketing Manager Oral Care, GSK Consumer Healthcare Sdn Bhd said, “This year, GSK is celebrating 60 years of building healthier communities in Malaysia, and we are committed to enhancing the standard of oral healthcare across the country. Through this event, we hope to address the feelings of anxiety and isolation commonly seen amongst denture wearers, empowering them to eat, speak and smile with confidence.”

The programme also featured educational demonstrations which aimed to equip attendees with the knowledge on how to best care for their dentures. FREE Denture Care Check Up also available in the month of July 2018.

My parents are also wearing dentures. Dentures hygiene is important for one’s health. My parents use Polident Daily Cleanser for their dentures as disinfectant. The Polident Daily Cleanser was act ultra fast and able to deep clean the dentures in 3 minutes to kills 99.99% of odour causing bacteria. Ops! My parents tend to soak their dentures overnight. Got to go home and inform them.

Normally mouse mommy was noticed about annually Dental Check Up for our teeth and I do bring along family and kids for dental check up. This is the first time got to know that Polident FREE Denture Care Check Up which is good for denture wearers and community. So considerate of Polident!

GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Sdn Bhd (“GSK”), the manufacturer of Polident, the no.1 denture care brand in Malaysia, aims to empower denture wearers with denture care knowledge and bring back their confidence through its ‘Eat, Speak and Smile with Confidence’ educational forum held recently.

Living with dentures is a topic that few people feel comfortable to open up about, especially with their peers. Denture-wearing is usually considered as a sign of ageing, but there are people who start their journey with dentures from as early as 38 years old. Consequently, dentures are a lot more common than many people may think. In fact, denture wearers make up about 10% of the Malaysian population.

“Wearing dentures can have a significant impact on a persons’ self-esteem, especially if it is the person’s first time wearing dentures. Patients often worry that by wearing dentures, they would not be able to speak or eat normally, and they usually fear that dentures will drastically change the way they look,” said Dr Natasya Ahmad Tarib, Prosthodontist and Senior Lecturer in Faculty of Dentistry Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Dr Natasya added that as a result of low self-esteem, denture wearers often tend to be reluctant to discuss their social and functional challenges regarding their dentures, inadvertently causing them to face the challenges of living with dentures alone.

“Some of the common challenges faced by denture wearers include how well their dentures fit in their mouths, as well as how to ensure the cleanliness of the dentures, which can have a significant impact on both their comfort and oral health. They are also concerned about their floating dentures, where their dentures become loose, while they eat or speak, possibly leading to an embarrassing moment. However, with the right understanding of denture care and education, denture wearers can be more confident.” Dr Natasya said.

“Taking good care of the dentures themselves is extremely important. As with teeth, dentures are prone to developing plaque, tartar and stains, and so a daily cleaning routine is essential to maintain your oral hygiene. However, dentures are not indestructible – they are 10 times softer than natural teeth. Hence, wearers need to be vigilant in taking the best possible care when cleaning their dentures to prevent damage.” Dr Natasya stated.

Polident offers denture care products formulated to provide a firmer hold and cleaner dentures, to improve the comfort and oral health of people who wear dentures or partials. The Polident low-abrasive denture cleansers are formulated specifically to keep your dentures clean, fresh and to maintain daily oral hygiene. It kills 99.9% of odour-causing bacteria and its non-abrasive formula cleans dentures without scratching its surface pores thereby preventing bacterial growth.

Meanwhile, Polident’s range of denture adhesives are formulated to improve denture comfort by holding dentures tight for up to 12 hours and sealing out irritating food particles, giving wearers the confidence and reassurance to live through the day without worries. Cheers!

“We want to encourage denture wearers to use the best possible solutions to ensure optimal oral health and comfort in their dentures’ fixture. As a continuation of our ‘Eat, Speak and Smile with Confidence’ initiative, throughout July and August we are giving denture wearers the chance to try our Polident products with our Polident Money Back Guarantee programme nationwide,” said Alycia.

“Additionally, we are delighted to collaborate with the Malaysian Dental Association to provide denture wearers with free denture check-ups during the month of July at participating dental clinics nationwide. We are certain that our efforts, together with our Polident products that provides denture wearers with a firmer hold and cleaner dentures, we will be bringing back those confident smiles.” Alycia concluded.
